The Sagadahoc Bridge was Maine DOT’s first design-build project. This 2,972’ long conccrete segmental bridge has 12 spans and features a 420’ main span over the Kennebec River. A two-cell precast concrete segmental box girder was used for spans over the river, allowing  superstructure production to continue during severe Maine winters. A two-cell cast-in-place segmental box girder was used fo spans over land. Segments are typically 69’ wide, with a maximum weight of 100 tons for the precast segments. Using one two-cell box girder to carry the bridge deck saved half the precasting and erection operations.

A one-day bridge design charette allowed the community the opportunity to select aesthetic features.
