GM2 completed the design of the replacement Cottrell Bridge No. 193, which carries Westerly-Bradford Road (RI 91) over McGowan Brook in Westerly, under RIDOT’s 2018 On-Call Bridge Design Consultant Contract. The new bridge is a single-span composite tub girder structure consisting of pile supported precast concrete footings and walls. The composite tub girder structure supports a reinforced concrete deck and parapets and a bituminous wearing surface. The highway approaches are constructed of gravel foundation with bituminous pavement. This replacement bridge structure remained within the original bridge’s existing footprint, without widening of roadway or sidewalks. The abutments of the existing bridge remained while the replacement structure included new abutment stems.

This project also involved the partial demolition of the existing bridge, temporary support of excavations, replacement of 6” gas line, dewatering, guardrails, a beaver exclosure fence, maintenance and protection of traffic, signage, clearing, as well as erosion and sediment control.
