The 5,375’ long, two-lane, fixed-span South Norfolk Jordan Bridge is a modern, eco-conscious, high-level crossing over the Southern Branch of the Elizabeth River providing 145’ vertical and 270’ horizontal clearances. The new bridge restores a vital link between Chesapeake and Portsmouth, Virginia.

Enhanced environmental features include: 1) No excavation of a superfund site,  2) LED lighting to save energy,  3) New technology railing cleans pollution from the air,  4) all precast next to the bridge for low energy production,  5) enhanced landscaping at ends of the bridge and in the park under the bridge, and  6) community involvement in learning and participating in the bridge during construction.

Precast concrete segmental balanced cantilever construction using a barge mounted crane accomplished the bridge’s long main spans over the river. Multiple erection headings allowed the bridge to be built quickly. Superstructure erection of the mile long bridge took just 14 months. Construction from above maintained river, rail, and vehicular traffic below the bridge. A focus on protecting the environment meant quick sustainable construction.

The bridge has received 14 awards, serving as an example for environmental and community stewardship including the American Road & Transportation Builders Association’s Globe and PRIDE Awards.
