Client: University of Rhode Island
Construction Cost: $3M
Key Facts:
GM2, as the University of Rhode Island’s lead consultant, completed the engineering design of a new 400 space parking facility including access roads at Plains Road. This parking facility is located adjacent to the Flaggs Road parking lot in the northwest section of the Kingston campus. URI has constructed this facility to reduce traffic caused by parking congestion throughout the campus. Additionally, this facility includes a solar panel array canopy, the first of its kind at URI, in an initiative to reduce the University’s electrical costs and provide renewable energy to the University and surrounding communities.
The parking facility itself was constructed with over 9,000 tons of pervious pavement, and the final design included landscape and electrical lighting components that were then altered to accommodate over 83,000 square feet of overhead solar panels. The overhead solar panels will also provide shade and protection to commuter vehicles underneath during hot weather.
GM2 completed base mapping and survey, environmental permits, final design plans, construction estimates & specifications, contract documents, construction administration, and coordination with multiple consultant firms to complete this project. GM2 coordinated with the solar panel canopy designer and numerous sub-consultants to develop a conceptual plan for approval by the Rhode Island Building Code Commission.
