Key Facts:
Light rail transit has become the preferred commuting option for many residents in the Washington, D.C. area. These two elegant bridges are located at the end of the “Green Line” in Suitland, Maryland as part of the F-10A Branch Avenue Station Project, which also included an underground terminus station and a Park & Ride facility. The $10.8 million aerial structures were completed in February 1999, well ahead of the scheduled October 1999 completion date. Spanning rolling national park lands and environmentally sensitive wetlands, as well as crossing the busy Suitland Parkway, each bridge features an Inbound Track and an Outbound Track, facilitating commuter travel between Maryland's suburban Branch Avenue Station and Washington, D.C.
The structures feature single-cell precast concrete segmental post-tensioned box girders that span over Suitland Parkway and environmentally sensitive wetlands. The alignment includes ten horizontal curves, two vertical curves, and varying cross-slopes ranging from 0.0% to 12%. The overall design showcases simple, clean sculptural lines that harmoniously blend into the wooded park setting. To maintain consistency, segment lengths were standardized at 9’-6” for typical spans and 8’- 5” for expansion joint segments. The trapezoidal-shaped box maintains a constant depth of 8’-8” and a width of 32’-5”, with a maximum weight limited to 51.5 tons for ease of handling.
